RAW MANGO DAL

Another fruit I absolutely love come summer is raw mango. It reminds me of evenings spent at Marina Beach in Chennai, walking along eating all the junk food the hawkers have to offer. Raw mango with salt and chilli powder was our favourite. Whenever there is raw mango at home we try to make a variety of items with this one ingredient - be it chutney, salad, pickle etc.

Today I tried my hand at a dal preparation, which - if you follow my blog diligently - you would know is my comfort food. This recipe is very simple but extremely flavourful.

SERVES 6

INGREDIENTS

2 cups tur/ yellow moong dal

½ cup raw mango, grated

2-3 green chilli slit and deseeded

5-6 cloves of garlic

½ inch ginger

½ tsp turmeric powder

2 bay leaves

Salt to taste

a pinch of hing (asafoetida)

½ tsp cumin seeds

4-5 curry leaves

3-4 ried red chilli

METHOD

  1. Along with the 2 cups of dal, add the grated raw mango, green chilli, garlic, ginger, turmeric powder, bay leaf and salt in the pressure cooker. Add less water than usual to maintain a thicker consistency.

  2. Once it's cooked, prepare tadka by tempering the hing, cumin seeds, curry leaves, dried red chillies in hot oil.

  3. Serve with rotis or rice, or like me, have both!
